BUILDING IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS
SIGNAGE FOR EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND FIRST RESPONDERS
This signage system could make emergency responses much faster without the use of maps or prior knowledge of the school campus.
All across the country, school districts are setting a new requirement for facilities: the implementation of school building identification systems. This initiative aims to enhance the safety of students, staff, and first responders in emergency situations by:
- Enhancing the ability to locate anyone inside the building by first responders.
- Providing occupants a means to identify their location anywhere inside the building.
Read on to learn more and see why this vital program is being adopted in so many communities across the country.
What Are School Building Identification Systems?
School building identification systems are designed to help first responders quickly and accurately navigate school campuses during emergencies. These systems typically include:
- Exterior and Interior Signage: Clearly labeled entrances, hallways, stairwells, and rooms.
- Color-Coded or Symbol-Based Markers: Easy-to-understand visual guides to key areas such as gyms, cafeterias, or safe zones.
- Emergency Maps: Standardized layouts provided to local emergency services, showing building plans and critical access points.

BUILDING IDENTIFICATION OFTEN INCLUDES:
- Color coding different sections of the building.
- Placing a flag sign on each classroom so that each room can be identified when looking down the hallway.
- A sign on the interior of each room so that the occupants can identify the room that they are in.
- A window sticker on all rooms with an exterior window so the room can be identified from the outside.
- Colored arrows at hallway junctions to show the way to a certain color-coded section of the building.
- Color stripes through each hallway at the floor level.

BRANDING MAKES WAYFINDING AND IDENTIFICATION MORE IMPACTFUL

into your signage and campus wayfinding systems.
COMBINE SECURITY FILM WITH GRAPHICS FILMS FOR PROTECTION AND PRIVACY.
Protective films are transparent, but they can be combined with printed films to bring branding and style to any space.
Areas like administration offices and conference rooms—like this one at Marist High School—often require additional privacy due to the sensitive nature of the work going on inside. Our customizable window film provides an effective solution for improved privacy while maintaining confidentiality — all without compromising on natural light. These films can be tailored with graphics to align with the brand aesthetic, providing both privacy and a cohesive visual appeal.
