Over the years, Cushing has been a JDRF Chicago Chapter partner, having created signage and graphics for various events. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Monica Garvey is the Development Coordinator at JDRF and reached out to Account Manager Josette O’Neil out about an exciting prospect:
Plans were in motion to bring the JDRF Real Estate Games to Chicago.
What are the Real Estate Games?
A competition that brings together top brokers, developers, property managers, and commercial real estate industry leaders to compete in a series of sporting events. After tremendous success in Washington D.C. and New York City, JDRF had plans for a hat trick.
The City of Big Shoulders – Chi-Town – would be the next destination.
The JDRF Real Estate Fact Games have raised more than $8 million for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Created in 1989, the first event took place on July 20, 1990, at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.
Michael Mayberry has worked in the JDRF NY Chapter for two and a half years, launching the Real Estate Games in 2016.
He started in the Illinois Chapter in 2017 and executed the inaugural Chicago Games in 2018. After a call with Cushing team members, Josette O’Neil, Jon Davis and JDRF colleague, Dana Snodgrass, the graphics plan came together.
Color Digital Operator (and superstar) Michelle Ward assisted with sign designs.
“She was phenomenal to work with,” said Mayberry, “and made as many edits as necessary, always in a timely manner!”
“The signage you produced for the JDRF Chicago Real Estate Games was visually appealing and helped to raise the level of professionalism.”
Strategically placed banner stands pointed participants to register for the games.
During the afterparty, stands bookended the registration table. Volunteers could focus on distributing name badges and goodie bags.

As teams approached the afterparty, large 4’ x 4’ wind-resistant signage displayed teams and sponsors.
Positioned at the restaurant entrance, they helped volunteers direct participants inside Little Toasted, where name tags, goodie bags, and a well-deserved after-party was waiting.
Inside the restaurant, foam core signs served as a backdrop for announcements.
As sponsors, teams, and JDRF volunteers were recognized, graphics created additional opportunities for brand awareness. Attendees gathered around to hear announcements.
As the celebration continued, the wind-resistant Guerrilla Signs were shifted to provide additional sponsor and team recognition.
As attendees networked and enjoyed the afterparty on the restaurant patio, signage was visible.
